Alternator excitation control principle in different brands of alternator.

The concept of alternator running is to maintain a constant voltage to its terminal. This voltage is tend to fluctuate while loading, unloading and other circumstances. The terminal voltage of alternator is directly controlled by DC excitation current to the rotor circuit.

Thus this DC excitation current which is supplied by the AVR- automatic voltage regulator, is the controlling factor of alternator.

AVR receives power from from external source, plus the way AVR supply the excitation current to alternator is different in different types of Alternator manufacturing brand. Only the common fact is that the supply of AVR is AC which then converted to DC by a Rotating Diode detector(brushless excitation current scheme).

Here A=Voltage measurement, B= Current sensing / measurement. C= Supply to excitation system with AVR controlled, D= Excitation current supply for boost purpose . C and D are parallel or in shunt connected.

Excitation control principal in ABB alternator:

Here no direct excitation current or boost supply. A PMG or permanent magnet or Auxiliary winding is used to supply excitation current.
