Quadrature booster is a special use transformer to control the amount of real power flow between two parallel lines. Say from a generation station a dedicated line is to used for power flow and another spare is used alongside in parallel to share some load in case of over load in the dedicated line.

Where parallel circuits with different capacity exist between two points in a transmission grid the theory of quadrature transformer is to direct manipulation of the phase angle thus allowing the control of the division of power flow between the paths.
Operation of Quadrature booster transformer:
Quadrature booster transformer first get power from the main supply and add a 90° phase shift, then add this 90° phase shifted power again to the supply.
A shunt transformer to supply collects 90° phase shifted power from line and series to line transformer add the shifted power to line. So the supply line power is the vector sum of main supply+shifted power.The quantity of power add or decrease is controlled by tap connection. For increment boost tapping, for reduce buck tapping.
